FDA greenlights Multimin 90 trace mineral injection for cattle supplementation

Multimin 90 is the first and only FDA-approved drug to deliver four essential trace minerals—zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium—via a single subcutaneous injection.

USA – Axiota Animal Health has announced the successful FDA approval of Multimin® 90, a trace mineral injection that supports cattle health through strategic supplementation.

The transition to FDA-approved labeling is complete, confirming that the product meets the highest quality, safety, and efficacy standards.

Multimin 90 is the first and only FDA-approved drug to deliver four essential trace minerals—zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium—via a single subcutaneous injection.

The injectable format leads to a measurable rise in blood mineral levels within 8 to 10 hours and boosts liver storage within 24 hours, making it an effective complement to oral mineral programs.

The approval, granted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Center for Veterinary Medicine, follows a multi-year research and regulatory effort by Axiota.

The company is among the few to voluntarily transition an existing product through the FDA’s rigorous drug approval process.

The approval of Multimin 90 as a new animal drug confirms that the product veterinarians and beef and dairy producers have relied on since 2010 meets the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficacy for animal health products,” said Bill Weldon, CEO of Axiota Animal Health.

Taking the additional steps to secure FDA approval is a testament to Axiota’s continued commitment to provide a reliable and high-quality supply of trusted, proven products to cattle producers.

Trace minerals play a critical role in immune function, reproduction, and stress management in cattle. However, even the best oral mineral programs face limitations due to inconsistent feed intake, poor digestibility, and fluctuating demands.

Multimin 90 helps producers overcome these challenges by delivering uniform mineral supplementation across the herd.

Cattle that are fully supplemented are more prepared for periods of transition and stress,” the company noted in a statement.

Multimin 90 is already approved for use in more than 30 countries, including major cattle-producing regions in Europe, North America, and Latin America.

The product comes with a 14-day preslaughter withdrawal time and is not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy or in pre-ruminant calves, as safety has not been established in those cases.

Axiota also warns against concurrent use with other selenium or copper injections due to potential toxicity risks.
