Uganda to host Africa’s largest aquaculture summit in June 2025

UGANDA- The World Aquaculture Safari 2025 (WA25), the largest aquaculture gathering in Africa, is set to take place from June 24-27, 2025, at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, Uganda.

With nearly 2,000 participants expected from across the globe, WA25 will serve as both a regional and international platform for advancing sustainable aquaculture development.

WA25 is a world-class event designed to foster collaboration, innovation, and investment, bringing together industry professionals, researchers, policymakers, and investors to discuss critical issues such as technology advancements, sustainability, trade, and value chain competitiveness.

The event builds on the success of previous Aquaculture Africa (AFRAQ) Conferences held in Egypt (2022), Zambia (2023), and Tunisia (2024).

Why Uganda?

Given the nation’s booming aquaculture sector, Uganda’s selection as the host country is strategic. East Africa is the fastest-growing aquaculture region on the continent, with tilapia and catfish farming leading production.

According to the organisers, Uganda, in particular, has seen remarkable growth, with large-scale commercial ventures alongside thriving small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

These SMEs contribute to local food security and play a key role in developing aquafeed supply chains. In response to this growing demand, several large-scale aquafeed factories are now being established in Uganda.

Key sponsors and partners

The EU-funded TRUEFISH Project, under the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation (LVFO), is leading the event’s sponsorship.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has signed on as a Gold Sponsor, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable African aquaculture development.

GIZ has played a crucial role in past AFRAQ conferences and continues to support initiatives focused on value chain development, capacity building, and environmentally responsible aquaculture.

WA25 has also garnered support from leading development organisations, including the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), African Union agencies, and WorldFish.

These organisations will host special side sessions and workshops covering various topics, from regional policies and emerging technologies to investment opportunities and global trade dynamics.

WA25 is also backed by major industry sponsors, including Aller Aqua, Blue Aqua, Zeigler, MSD Animal Nutrition, INVE, Devee Group, and SyAqua, ensuring a well-funded and high-impact event.

A key highlight of WA25 will be its extensive trade show, featuring nearly 150 exhibition booths. The exhibition will showcase cutting-edge products, services, and innovations from leading aquaculture companies worldwide, providing attendees with opportunities to network, explore new solutions, and form strategic partnerships.

The conference will feature a diverse program of keynote speeches, panel discussions, and technical sessions addressing critical industry challenges and opportunities.

Topics will include investment strategies, value chain competitiveness, sustainable practices, and the future of global aquaculture.

The abstract submission deadline has been extended until April 15, 2025, allowing researchers, industry experts, and stakeholders more time to contribute their insights and findings to this landmark event.

World Aquaculture 2025 Moves to India

In related news, the World Aquaculture 2025 convention, originally planned for China, has been relocated to Hyderabad, India, due to unforeseen circumstances. The event will now take place from November 10-13, 2025.

Despite the logistical challenges, organisers have reaffirmed their commitment to delivering a world-class experience, with the abstract submission deadline extended to August 31, 2025.

This relocation allows us to continue providing an exceptional experience for our attendees. Despite the challenges posed by this change, we are committed to ensuring a successful event and are excited about the opportunities this new location presents. We believe this is a positive development and the right time to return to India after our first successful experience there,” the organisers stated in a press release.
