DSM-Firmenich, Zenkei partner to drive sustainability in Japan’s egg industry

JAPAN – DSM-Firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health has announced a strategic partnership with Zenkei Company Limited, a leading livestock nutrition firm, to advance sustainability in Japan’s feed and egg production sectors.

The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to implement Sustell™, DSM-Firmenich’s industry-leading life cycle assessment (LCA) platform, which measures and improves the environmental footprint of animal protein production.

Zenkei Company Limited specialises in livestock nutrition and feed production, offering innovative premixes and feed solutions that enhance animal health and performance.

By adopting Sustell™, the company aims to set new sustainability benchmarks in Japan’s egg industry while taking a proactive approach to environmental responsibility.

The collaboration will see Zenkei implement DSM-Firmenich’s cloud-based solution to track, optimise, and minimise the environmental impact of its feed and livestock farming operations.

A key focus of the initiative is the development of an environmentally friendly feed incorporating dried food waste. This “eco-feed” reduces the environmental footprint by 30-50% compared to conventional feeds, as verified by Sustell.

This partnership underscores the shared commitment of DSM-Firmenich and Zenkei to advancing sustainable practices in Japan’s egg production sector.

Dr. Mongkol Kaewsutas, Director of Precision Services Greater APAC at DSM-Firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, emphasised the significance of the collaboration.

This partnership represents a major step forward in promoting sustainable practices across the egg production value chain. By leveraging the Sustell platform, Zenkei can access precise data to optimise its operations, reduce environmental impact, and contribute to Japan’s broader sustainability goals,” said Dr. Kaewsutas.

Zenkei’s Director & General Manager, Mr. Shotaro Takasugi, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of resource efficiency in livestock nutrition.

To maximise the efficiency and sustainability of nutritious animal protein, we must go beyond effective feed additives and improved farm management. It is equally important to utilise nutrients otherwise unavailable for human consumption, such as ‘eco-feed’ derived from processed food waste. This is why Sustell’s environmental footprint calculation is an indispensable component of our strategy,” said Mr. Takasugi.

As Japan’s egg industry evolves, the MOU between DSM-Firmenich and Zenkei Company Limited sets a precedent for best practices in environmental stewardship and operational excellence.

With Japan’s egg market projected to reach US$7.01 billion by 2025 and grow at an annual rate of 3.48% through 2030, sustainability initiatives like this partnership will be critical in shaping the industry’s future.

Earlier this year, DSM-Firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health partnered with Tianlai Livestock Group to address carbon emissions in China’s beef cattle industry.

The collaboration seeks to transform the sector by introducing innovative low-carbon farming practices, leveraging DSM-Firmenich’s Sustell.

The partnership was formalised on January 7th through a memorandum of understanding (MOU). Under the agreement, Tianlai Livestock Group will adopt the Sustell platform to measure and reduce the environmental footprint of beef production.
