Polish biotech pioneer unveils scalable beef alternative for pet food

POLAND – Proteine Resources, a Polish biotechnology company, has developed the world’s first scalable beef analog with a 1:1 nutritional profile to real beef.

This innovation offers a cost-effective and sustainable alternative for pet food manufacturers, slashing production costs by up to 50% without compromising nutrition. The company is preparing for commercial launch, marking a significant milestone in pet food innovation.

For years, the pet food market has grappled with traditional meat’s high cost and environmental impact.

Consumers are increasingly seeking sustainable and allergy-friendly alternatives, but existing solutions—such as plant-based, lab-cultured, or precision-fermented proteins—remain expensive and difficult to scale.

Proteine Resources’ breakthrough technology directly addresses this challenge by providing an affordable, high-quality alternative that meets industry demands for both nutrition and sustainability.

Nutrient-rich, hypoallergenic, and eco-friendly

Unlike conventional meat substitutes, Proteine Resources’ beef analog is insect-based, offering a rich protein source while being hypoallergenic and prebiotic.

The dry granule formulation contains 70% protein, all essential amino acids, iron, vitamin B12, and omega fatty acids.

Free from chemicals and GMOs, it supports pet gut health and maintains a natural taste and texture that pets find appealing.

Beyond nutritional benefits, the product also champions environmental sustainability. Industrial meat production significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, with beef being one of the most resource-intensive proteins.

In contrast, Proteine Resources’ insect farming method operates in complete darkness, reducing production time to just four weeks while drastically cutting emissions and resource consumption.

This sustainable approach aligns with the growing industry push toward eco-conscious pet food solutions.

With the pet food sector experiencing rapid growth, there is a rising demand for high-quality, sustainable ingredients.

Studies indicate that nearly one in three dogs and 15% of cats suffer from food allergies, with beef being a primary culprit.

By offering a nutritious and allergen-friendly alternative, Proteine Resources is well-positioned to meet this demand while helping pet food manufacturers create innovative, cost-effective products.

The company has developed a modular, AI-driven mini-factory production model to ensure seamless scalability. This innovative approach enables global expansion while maintaining efficiency and quality control.

As a testament to market interest, Proteine Resources has already secured five letters of intent with pet food producers and is rapidly expanding its production capacity at its Masłomiąca facility near Krakow.

Investment and future expansion

Proteine Resources has raised €1.82 million in funding to date, including €1.36 (US$1.42) million from venture capital firms Bitspiration Booster and SMOK Ventures in 2024. This investment has fueled advancements in production, enhanced processing capabilities, and bolstered marketing efforts.

Looking ahead, the company is constructing its first full-scale pilot factory in Poland and intensifying research and development initiatives.

With an ambitious target of securing €3 (US$3.12) million in off-take agreements by mid-2026, Proteine Resources aims to redefine the pet food industry by delivering a scalable, nutritious, and environmentally responsible beef alternative.

Biotech and deeptech projects require time and significant investment for development and commercialisation. Last year’s funding round accelerated our growth, allowing us to achieve over 80% of our goals quickly. We aim for the next round to propel us even further,” says Bart Roszkowski, co-CEO of Proteine Resources.
