Aker QRILL partners Turkish shipyard to rebuild advanced krill fishing vessel

NORWAY – Aker QRILL Company, a newly independent spinout of Aker BioMarine, has entered into a landmark agreement with Turkey’s Tersan Shipyard to purchase and rebuild a nearly completed vessel initially slated for delivery in 2023.

The vessel, designed to harvest Antarctic krill, is set to play a vital role in meeting the growing global demand for sustainable aquafeed ingredients.

This partnership represents an ideal solution for both parties,” said Webjørn Barstad, CEO of Aker QRILL Company.

Adding a fourth vessel to our fleet is crucial for our success as we enter the next phase of growth and development. Equipped with the latest and most advanced technologies, this vessel will bolster our ambition to maintain leadership in the krill industry and ensure access to renewable marine raw materials.”

The agreement marks a significant milestone for Tersan Shipyard, which faced the challenge of finding a buyer for the unused vessel.

Partnering with Aker QRILL Company aligns perfectly with our vision of innovation and excellence,” said Ahmet Paksu, Vice President of Tersan Shipyard. “We are excited to see this project completed and operational.”

The rebuilt vessel will operate under a Norwegian fisheries license within the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)-overseen krill fishery starting in late 2026.

It will undergo extensive customisation to meet the specific needs of krill fishing, incorporating advanced technologies and alternative fuel systems.

The project is also expected to generate significant contracts for Norwegian maritime suppliers, strengthening local innovation and expertise.

Aker QRILL Company’s independence, achieved through joint ownership by American Industrial Partners (AIP) and Aker Capital, signals a new chapter for the business.

Focused on the harvesting and processing of krill, the company aims to provide high-quality marine ingredients for the aquaculture, pet food, and nutraceutical industries.

Operating with complete control over its value chain, from Antarctic waters to global distribution hubs, Aker QRILL ensures transparency and traceability in its operations.

The company, jointly owned by American Industrial Partners (AIP) (60%) and Aker Capital (40%), is valued at US$590 million and was developed to meet the growing demand for sustainable marine ingredients.

The acquisition of this 4th vessel brings the company a step forward in its quest to meet this demand sustainably.
