NETHERLANDS – Dutch animal nutrition powerhouse De Heus Voeders has announced the acquisition of Kessels Holding B.V., a strategic move to reinforce its position in the broiler sector in the Netherlands and Belgium.
While the financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, the acquisition encompasses all entities under Kessels Holding.
Kessels Holding, founded in 1876, is a respected player in poultry processing, managing a fully integrated operation that includes a compound feed factory (Van der Linden Diervoeders), broiler farms (Van der Linden Poultry Farms), and a broiler slaughterhouse (Van der Linden Poultry Products).
The family-run enterprise processes broilers from its farms and independent poultry farmers, distributing chicken products across Europe and beyond.
The broiler slaughterhouse employs approximately 65 permanent and 25 part-time staff, with operations spanning supply, ready-to-cook products, packaging, and dispatch.
Leadership transition with stability
The acquisition follows a long-standing search for successors by Kessels Holding’s current directors, Jan and Geert Kessels.
With Jan preparing for retirement and Geert set to continue as operational director for slaughterhouse activities, the move ensures the business’s continuity and stability.
De Heus has emphasised its commitment to maintaining the company’s legacy while modernising its operations to adapt to evolving market demands.
For suppliers and customers, the transition promises minimal disruption. De Heus has pledged to uphold all existing agreements, reinforcing trust and stability within the supply chain.
This assurance is critical for Van der Linden Poultry Products’ operations, which employ close to 100 people and are renowned for high-quality chicken products, including whole broilers and parts.
Strengthening the broiler sector
This acquisition marks a strategic downstream expansion for De Heus, traditionally recognised for its feed production, premixes, and concentrates for livestock and fish.
De Heus intends to leverage its expertise to modernise Kessels Holding’s operations, aligning them with global best practices while preserving the company’s core values and legacy.
The company expressed confidence in the Dutch and Belgian broiler sectors, citing the acquisition as a move to ensure stability and growth for the family business and the industry.
De Heus’ entry into poultry processing aligns with its global diversification and growth strategy.
Operating in 75 countries, the company has a reputation for quality and innovation, supported by partnerships and joint ventures across Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa. Its expertise spans feed production and consulting services, contributing to a holistic approach to animal nutrition and farming solutions.
