USA – The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued a stark warning to California residents following a series of cat fatalities linked to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in raw pet food.
The advisory, released on December 31, 2024, urged pet owners to avoid feeding their animals Monarch Raw Pet Food, which has been sold at farmers’ markets across the state.
The warning came after a house cat that consumed this product tested positive for HPAI. Four other cats in the same household, presumed to have eaten the same raw food, also showed symptoms consistent with the virus and succumbed to the illness.
The department emphasised the dangers of raw milk and raw meat products, advising residents to steer clear of these items for themselves and their pets.
Earlier in December, Los Angeles health officials confirmed cases of HPAI in four house cats that consumed Raw Farm raw milk.
The infected animals developed severe symptoms, including respiratory and neurological distress, before their conditions rapidly deteriorated.
Tragically, all four cats died. The incident prompted a recall of raw milk and cream products linked to the outbreak.
In a separate case, another household in Los Angeles County reported three cat deaths due to HPAI. Although the source of infection remains under investigation, officials suspect exposure to raw meat.
Across state lines in Oregon, the highly contagious virus claimed the life of an indoor cat after it consumed Northwest Naturals Feline Turkey Recipe frozen raw pet food.
Genetic testing confirmed an exact match between the virus in the pet food and the infected cat.
Dr. Ryan Scholz, Oregon’s State Veterinarian, stated the case provided “conclusive evidence” of infection through contaminated raw pet food.
Symptoms and ongoing risks
Cats infected with HPAI may display neurological signs, respiratory distress, or liver disease, which can escalate swiftly to death. Common symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite, and respiratory issues.
Although no human cases of avian influenza have been linked to these outbreaks, health authorities continue to monitor individuals exposed to the infected animals.
Human symptoms of HPAI range from respiratory difficulties to gastrointestinal issues and flu-like symptoms.
As investigations continue, health officials urge caution when handling raw pet food and recommend adopting safer alternatives for feeding pets.
