Onda advances global shrimp aquaculture with Brazilian partnership

BRAZIL – Canadian research firm Onda has announced the launch of a satellite location in Brazil dedicated to whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) research.

This initiative marks a significant step in the company’s commitment to advancing shrimp farming practices globally.

Onda, headquartered in Prince Edward Island, has partnered with a leading Brazilian aquaculture facility to conduct cutting-edge trials on shrimp nutrition and health.

The collaboration enables the firm to address critical performance metrics, including hatch success, growth rates, feed efficiency, survival rates, and disease resistance.

After years of development and securing reliable supply chains, we are thrilled to expand our services to include shrimp, the largest category by production in aquaculture,” said Myrna Gillis, CEO of Onda.

As shrimp farming becomes increasingly pivotal to the global seafood supply, this species represents an essential focus for Onda.

Importing whiteleg shrimp to Canada presents logistical and regulatory challenges, making the Brazilian partnership a strategic solution.

Leveraging advanced infrastructure at the partner facility, Onda maintains its hallmark of high-quality, customisable research while gaining geographic access to this vital aquaculture species.

Our trials aim to help the aquaculture industry build more resilient stock and sustainable practices,” Gillis added. “This effort aligns with global needs for secure and eco-friendly seafood sources.”

The initial research phase emphasises shrimp nutrition, exploring feed formulations to enhance growth, digestibility, and palatability.

These studies are designed to support aquaculture producers in improving survival rates, reducing environmental impacts, and increasing profitability.

Onda plans to expand into health trials soon, addressing biosecurity and disease resistance—critical components in reducing antibiotic reliance and combating pathogens in intensive shrimp farming environments.

Shrimp farming is a cornerstone of the “blue economy,” offering opportunities to meet rising seafood demands while adhering to sustainable practices.

According to Grand View Research, the global shrimp market size was estimated at US$68.40 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.5% from 2023 to 2030.

It is considered a low-fat, high-protein alternative to other meats, making it a popular choice, inspiring considerable growth in its global market size.

Onda is well-positioned to deliver innovative solutions that enhance productivity and promote resilience in global shrimp aquaculture through its Brazilian satellite facility.
