UAE – The International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) Mideast & Africa (MEA) Conference and Expo, held from November 10–13, 2024, at the Dubai World Trade Centre, brought together over 800 industry leaders from more than 50 countries to spotlight, among other topics, advances in the animal feed milling sector.
As demand for animal feed continues to rise in the Middle East and Africa, driven by growing meat consumption, government food security initiatives, and a focus on enhanced animal nutrition, the conference highlighted key developments poised to shape the region’s feed milling landscape.
One of the primary focus areas at this year’s event was the integration of digital technologies to improve feed milling efficiency and safety.
In a session moderated by Kamaldeep Singh Phull of Maisha Flour Mills, panelists discussed cutting-edge feed milling technology that aims to enhance operational flexibility and sustainability.
Another standout topic was the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in feed production, with Ivan Harjacek of ANDRITZ sharing insights into practical AI applications that are already delivering measurable improvements in production efficiency.
“AI isn’t just a future prospect—it’s a present reality with measurable impacts on efficiency, sustainability, and profitability in feed milling,” Harjacek stated.
Alongside AI, storage technology for feed meals was another key topic.
Nicoleta Axenti from METALMONT SRL presented on innovations in safe storage solutions designed to prevent contamination and ensure consistent feed quality.
Efficient storage systems are increasingly critical as the region’s feed market, which was 26.8 million tons in 2023, is projected to grow to 30.87 million tons by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.88%, according to Report Ocean.
The event also spotlighted advancements in high-quality extruded shrimp feed, presented by Bühler Group’s Philippe Taeschler.
This showcased the industry’s push for specialised feed products that cater to diverse livestock and aquaculture needs in the region.
Beyond technical sessions, the IAOM MEA Conference offered an expansive expo with nearly 180 booths, where exhibitors showcased the latest products and services in grain and flour, baking, and feed milling technology.
The event provided a platform for regional stakeholders to network, share knowledge, and discuss the future of sustainable feed production—a growing necessity given the rising demand for meat and government-backed self-sufficiency efforts across the Middle East and North Africa.
As the conference concluded, participants anticipated that the discussions and innovations presented would have far-reaching impacts on policy, technology adoption, and standards in the MEA region’s feed milling industry.
