World Poultry Foundation launches training in Senegal to empower local poultry sector

SENEGAL – To strengthen Senegal’s poultry sector and promote food security, the World Poultry Foundation (WPF) recently held an intensive training session in Senegal in collaboration with local partner Couvoir Amar.

This initiative, designed to empower newly recruited Field Service Representatives (FSRs), aims to enhance the expertise of local poultry professionals and catalyse economic opportunities in the region.

The training underscores WPF’s commitment to sustainable poultry development and food security across Senegal by equipping FSRs with the knowledge and skills needed to serve as effective field representatives.

The training marks the launch of WPF’s Advanced Poultry Management Initiative (APMI), a program centred on practical, hands-on techniques for raising, managing, and marketing poultry.

A key focus of the APMI is the establishment of Brooder Units (BUs), essential setups that provide chicks with proper care during their critical early weeks.

By emphasising Brooder Units, WPF aims to foster healthier poultry production, a vital step toward establishing a resilient poultry industry in Senegal.

The training featured on-site demonstrations, where FSRs gained direct experience in setting up Brooder Units, managing chick health, and identifying optimal conditions for chick survival.

These practical exercises helped the FSRs understand the fundamentals of chick brooding, preparing them to effectively support and train local farmers.

The training also introduced FSRs to essential marketing skills, which are key to the growth of Senegal’s poultry sector. By teaching FSRs how to conduct community-based marketing sessions, WPF hopes to increase demand for poultry and raise awareness about best practices in poultry farming.

These sessions equip FSRs with the skills to educate farmers on the benefits of poultry farming and encourage the use of high-quality, locally sourced poultry products.

The emphasis on community engagement will help FSRs foster trust and build a support network for farmers, enabling them to approach poultry farming with confidence and a dependable safety net.

Through the APMI program, WPF aims to cultivate a self-sustaining poultry ecosystem by training FSRs as community liaisons and trusted information sources.

This holistic approach integrates technical know-how with community-building efforts, supporting WPF’s overarching goal of developing self-sufficient poultry industries in developing nations.

By empowering FSRs to guide farmers in both the technical and commercial aspects of poultry farming, WPF envisions a ripple effect that will drive economic growth and bolster food security throughout Senegal’s rural areas.

The FSRs’ initial response was highly encouraging, with participants demonstrating great enthusiasm and a sense of purpose.

This inaugural training session provided them with essential skills and a deep commitment to their roles as community resources.

As WPF and Couvoir Amar continue to support the FSRs, the knowledge they’ve gained will translate into tangible improvements in poultry productivity and health across Senegal.

By raising awareness, educating local farmers, and championing sustainable practices, these FSRs will play a pivotal role in advancing WPF’s goals for sustainable poultry development.
