JAMAICA – CB Group, a leading Jamaican agricultural company, and Devenish Nutrition, a global player in animal nutrition, have inaugurated a groundbreaking poultry research facility in Jamaica.
The Nest, a US$1 million facility that opened on October 25 at CB Group’s eco-industrial park, is the first of its kind in the Americas and aims to advance poultry farming in tropical climates.
Equipped with 48 pens, the facility is designed to conduct scientific trials on various aspects of poultry rearing, including feed formulations, housing conditions, and breed performance.
These trials allow for up to six different dietary treatments per study, providing valuable insights into the most efficient and effective ways to raise broiler chickens in warm, humid conditions.
Matthew Lyn, CEO of CB Group, underscored the importance of this research in making Jamaica’s poultry industry more competitive.
“Poultry is an extremely competitive industry worldwide, and we must do everything we can to be as efficient as possible and do what’s best for our country,” he stated during the opening ceremony.
He added that the research conducted at the facility has the potential to benefit farmers throughout the region who operate in similar climates.
Devenish Nutrition CEO Tony McEntee expressed excitement over the 15-year-old partnership with CB Group.
“The science-based approach in our Performance House model supports the development and introduction of new feed and management solutions that can maximise animal performance and producer profitability by optimising cost per kilogram gained,” McEntee said.
Conducting research in tropical conditions, he noted, will make the findings relevant not only for CB Group but for other poultry producers across the Caribbean and beyond.
The facility represents a significant advancement in poultry research for tropical regions, providing farmers with targeted solutions to improve productivity and sustainability in poultry farming.
This investment is aligned with the trends seen in the facility’s macroeconomic environment indicating significant growth in the poultry industry in Jamaica.
According to Report Linker’s data, the poultry industry in Jamaica is expected to grow steadily over the next five years, with poultry output reaching around 159,000 metric tons by 2028.
This is an annual compound growth rate (CAGR) of 1.4% and indicates potential for the industry to grow, slowly but steadily.
