NORWAY – Norwegian biotech pioneer Aker BioMarine has announced a new distribution partnership with Barentz International B.V., a global speciality ingredients provider.
This move marks a strategic move to expand its reach across key European markets.
This collaboration, covering Italy, San Marino, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, aims to expand the consumer base for Aker BioMarine’s sustainable krill oil products.
Mercè Piñol, Aker BioMarine’s Senior Vice President of Sales for Human Health Ingredients, praised the partnership for combining Barentz’s extensive market presence and life sciences expertise with Aker BioMarine’s sustainable offerings.
Alexandre Blanc of Barentz emphasised that the partnership will strengthen their position as a global leader in nutraceuticals by giving customers access to high-quality, sustainably sourced krill oil.
This expansion aligns with Aker BioMarine’s recent strategic shift following the sale of its feed ingredients business to American Industrial Partners (AIP) and Aker Capital.
The sale, valued at US$590 million, allows Aker BioMarine to concentrate on human health and nutrition, reinforcing its commitment to advancing global wellness through sustainable practices.
In parallel with its European expansion, Aker BioMarine has also been recognised as a finalist in the Best Innovation – Private Sector category for the 2024 Global Innovation Management Institute (GIMI) Innovation Awards, which will be held in Barcelona.
This accolade highlights Aker BioMarine’s achievements in fostering sustainable, innovative solutions, such as its industry-leading krill-based ingredients that support joint and cognitive health, especially for ageing populations.
CEO Matts Johansen credited the company’s “ambidextrous” approach—balancing innovation with operational excellence—as a vital factor in its growth, noting that the company’s krill fishery is one of the world’s most sustainable.
Johansen stated, “With a growing global population, it’s essential that we look to the ocean as part of the solution. Innovation is at the core of how we responsibly achieve this, supporting global health through advanced science and nutrient-rich products.”
As one of Norway’s top innovators, Aker BioMarine’s commitment to environmental stewardship and operational efficiency continues to set industry standards, ensuring the company remains at the forefront of health-focused, sustainable marine solutions.
