Lake Victoria Aquaculture Forum spurs action for sustainable growth

KENYA – On October 17, 2024, the Lake Victoria Aquaculture Forum convened at Kisumu’s Sarova Imperial Hotel, attracting critical stakeholders from across the aquaculture value chain.

Hosted by the Lake Victoria Aquaculture Association (LVA) and managed by the Ohala Kenya Foundation, the forum aimed to tackle key issues in the Lake Victoria Basin, which remains central to Kenya’s Blue Economy.

The event featured notable speakers, including H.E. Governor Dr. Paul Otuoma, Vice Chair of the Blue Economy Pillar of Governors, and H.E. Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, Chair of the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB).

They, along with other policymakers, industry experts, and private-sector representatives from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, engaged in vibrant discussions on safeguarding the lake’s aquaculture ecosystem.

Discussions highlighted pressing challenges, including the alarming decline in fish stocks, environmental degradation, and the impact of fish imports on local markets.

Attendees examined the effects of upwelling events that disrupt fish populations, contributing to fish kills and diminishing the livelihoods of local communities.

This discourse underscored the need for collaborative approaches to protect the lake’s resources and ensure the sustainable growth of aquaculture.

The forum also emphasised the importance of cross-border cooperation to address shared issues affecting the Lake Victoria ecosystem.

The representation from multiple East African nations showcased the collective commitment to building resilience and enhancing productivity within the region.

A key theme of the event was the empowerment of women and youth in aquaculture, with dedicated sessions allowing these groups to share insights and experiences.

Women in aquaculture highlighted both their achievements and the challenges faced in the industry, while young entrepreneurs showcased innovative ventures, such as the Aquaculture Barn, which provides jobs for local youth through Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).

This focus on community inclusion signals a promising step toward equitable economic development within the Lake Region.

Investment and value addition

Investment opportunities and market expansion were major focal points at the forum. Participants explored ways to simplify licensing, standardise pricing, and improve access to affordable fish feed.

Additional discussions targeted value addition, with ideas on enhancing hatchery operations, breeding, and genetics to boost aquaculture productivity. These efforts are vital for Kisumu as they cement its position as a leading hub for aquaculture in East Africa.

Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o and other officials stressed the critical role of sustainable practices in ensuring the long-term productivity of Lake Victoria.

The emphasis on investment, innovation, and standardised processes highlighted the forum’s commitment to advancing aquaculture’s contribution to Kenya’s Blue Economy.

The forum demonstrated the power of partnership in supporting sustainable aquaculture practices, with contributions from key partners like the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) and Gatsby Africa.

In his address, Governor Dr. Paul Otuoma advocated for unified policy coordination among Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, emphasising that Lake Victoria’s resources are a shared, transboundary asset.

His call for policy reform to align Kenya’s Fisheries Act with the 2010 Constitution signalled the necessity for science-driven, sustainable solutions to challenges like overfishing and reliance on imports.

The forum concluded with a united commitment to foster environmentally friendly, modern aquaculture practices that protect Lake Victoria’s biodiversity while enhancing productivity.

The outcomes from this event promise to strengthen the region’s aquaculture potential, positioning Lake Victoria as a sustainable aquaculture hub in East Africa.
