GERMANY – Brenntag, a global leader in the distribution of chemicals and ingredients, celebrated its 150th anniversary with a grand ceremony in its hometown of Essen, Germany.

The event, held on October 22, 2024, brought together around 400 guests from the chemical industry, political figures, business partners, customers, and the company’s workforce to mark this significant milestone.

The ceremony, which took place at the Grand Hall in Zeche Zollverein, was the culmination of a year-long celebration that included global employee events, customer and supplier gatherings, and the release of the historical study 150 Years of Brenntag – From Berlin out into the World.

Christian Kohlpaintner, Chief Executive Officer of Brenntag SE, addressed the audience, reflecting on the company’s long journey from its humble beginnings in 1874 to becoming a world-renowned distributor.

With respect and pride, we celebrate our history and the people, decisions, and challenges that have shaped our company,” Kohlpaintner said.

Brenntag has continuously adapted to new conditions and needs, driven by curiosity and a pioneering spirit. We reflect on our past and gain insight from the experiences that guide us toward a responsible and successful tomorrow.

Founded by Jewish entrepreneur Philipp Mühsam in Berlin as an egg wholesale business in 1874, Brenntag quickly became a chemical trading company.

Over the decades, the company experienced several changes, including its acquisition by the Stinnes Group in 1937 and the renaming of the company to “Brennstoff-, Chemikalien- und Transport-Aktiengesellschaft,” later shortened to “Brenntag.”

Despite the challenges of World War II, Brenntag’s headquarters moved to Mülheim an der Ruhr and continued its expansion, eventually establishing a presence in over 72 countries with 600 operational sites.

Kohlpaintner emphasised Brenntag’s resilience and growth over the years, highlighting its ability to thrive under various ownership structures and expand through organic growth and acquisitions.

Today, Brenntag serves thousands of customers globally, offering a diverse portfolio of industrial and speciality chemicals and value-added services.

With over 17,700 employees worldwide, the company continues to lead the market. It has been listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since 2010 and joined the prestigious DAX index in 2021.

The anniversary celebrations honoured the company’s rich history and acknowledged the collaborative efforts of Brenntag’s employees, customers, and partners.

This special anniversary is our way to thank our employees, customers, suppliers, and industry associations for their collaboration and commitment. I look forward to what comes next,” Kohlpaintner added.
