Entosystem secures US$58M to fuel expansion in sustainable insect protein production

CANADA – Entosystem has secured a substantial investment of US$58 million to accelerate its growth and fund the development of a second commercial plant.

This investment, led by Idealist Capital, Sanimax, and Fondaction, is a significant step towards meeting the growing demand for sustainable proteins and organic fertilisers, which are crucial for agriculture and animal nutrition.

Entosystem, a key player in the field, has pioneered the production of insect proteins and organic fertilisers using advanced, environmentally friendly technologies.

The company’s existing carbon-negative plant in Drummondville processes up to 90,000 tonnes of organic matter annually, producing 5,000 tonnes of high-quality protein meal and 15,000 tonnes of fertiliser approved for organic farming.

According to an independent study, this innovative facility diverts substantial amounts of organic waste from landfills, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an impressive 85%.

This agreement is the result of a rich collaboration with strategic business partners and, above all, the dedication of an outstanding team,” said Cédric Provost, President and Co-Founder of Entosystem. “We now have all the keys to achieve our ambitions and grow.”

Provost underscored that the new investment would enable the company to scale its production significantly and expand its presence in the rapidly growing sustainable protein market.

The upcoming second plant is expected to be a pivotal part of Entosystem’s growth strategy. By expanding its production capabilities, the company aims to address the rising demand for alternative protein sources, particularly insect protein, which is gaining traction as a more sustainable option in the animal feed industry.

We are delighted to support such an innovative company,” commented Martial Hamel, CEO of Sanimax. “Their sustainable approach aligns perfectly with our strategic plan for a greener environment.”

Idealist Capital, one of the investors, also lauded Entosystem’s efforts to drive sustainability. “With the Drummondville plant, Entosystem has demonstrated its capacity to economically reclaim organic matter through the production of proteins for animal feed and organic fertilisers,” said Steeve Robitaille, Co-Managing Partner at Idealist Capital.

As the insect protein industry continues to grow, this investment in Entosystem marks a critical milestone for the company and the broader movement towards sustainable food systems.

Claire Bisson, Vice-President at Fondaction, highlighted the broader environmental and societal benefits, noting, “When it comes to reducing the carbon footprint of the livestock sector through the production of insect proteins, we are doing a double whammy. Supporting increased production means multiplying the positive impact.
