NETHERLANDS – dsm-firmenich, a leading innovator in health, nutrition, and beauty, has announced the expansion of its life cycle assessment (LCA) platform, Sustell, to the beef industry.
This development marks a significant step forward in helping beef producers accurately measure and manage their operations’ environmental impact.
Sustell™, initially designed for environmental footprinting in feed, aquaculture, poultry, swine, and dairy production, where life cycle assessment (LCA) tools were already in higher demand, now extends its comprehensive capabilities to the beef sector.
With this expansion, beef producers can conduct detailed lifecycle assessments using their specific feed and farm data, allowing for more precise and informed decision-making.
The platform covers all stages of beef production, including cow/calf operations, breeding, and the growing phases for replacement and beef cattle. It also accommodates various production systems such as feedlot, housed, pasture, range, and paddock systems.
By incorporating these diverse production models, Sustell allows beef producers to assess and improve the sustainability of their operations, ensuring that their environmental footprint is credible and aligned with global standards.
Developed in collaboration with experts, including the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), Sustell for beef adheres to the latest guidelines from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2019.
This ensures the platform provides robust and reliable assessments, making it a valuable tool for producers looking to enhance their sustainability credentials.
David Morris, Global LCA Director at dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, emphasized the platform’s potential impact:
“By introducing Sustell™ for beef, producers gain access to a powerful platform for conducting comprehensive lifecycle assessments at scale using their own feed and farm data. This enables them to make informed decisions, achieve a strong return on investment, and ensure credible and accurate environmental footprinting.”
Morris highlighted the broader benefits of Sustell™, noting that it opens up new value opportunities, from enhancing farm productivity to pursuing eco-labelling and sustainable finance initiatives.
“Our commitment to innovation continues as we strive to advance sustainable farming,” he added.
With Sustell, dsm-firmenich is helping producers manage their environmental impact and unlocking new business opportunities in the rapidly evolving market for sustainable beef.
As sustainability becomes increasingly central to consumer choices and regulatory requirements, platforms like Sustell™ are poised to play a crucial role in the future of agriculture.
