UK – Mondi, a leader in sustainable packaging solutions, has announced the launch of FlexiBag Reinforced, a new line of recyclable packaging designed specifically for pet food applications.

This innovative range is made from mono polyethylene (PE) and boasts enhanced mechanical properties, positioning itself as a competitive alternative to conventional multi-material laminates.

FlexiBag Reinforced offers customizable packaging options with variations in thickness, barrier properties, and structural features.

These bags are tailored to meet the diverse needs of pet food manufacturers, providing options in size and bottom construction to enhance usability and product protection.

Dirk Gabriel, Mondi’s Chief Operating Officer for Consumer Flexibles, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability and regulatory compliance.

Mondi recognizes the increasing emphasis on PCR materials driven by future regulatory requirements, and as a market leader in sustainable pet food packaging, we are making every effort to secure a sufficient upstream supply of PCR material for our customers,” Gabriel stated.

He emphasized the collaborative approach with partners to ensure material efficiency and recyclability, adapting to each customer’s unique requirements.

The FlexiBag Reinforced line is designed to offer improved puncture resistance, stiffness, and sealability, making it a superior choice for packaging pet food.

The bags provide adjustable levels of barrier protection, offering medium to high barriers against fat, oxygen, and moisture.

This ensures the freshness and quality of the pet food, which is crucial in maintaining pets’ health and satisfaction.

One of FlexiBag Reinforced’s key features is its ability to incorporate post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, significantly reducing the use of virgin plastics. This aligns with future regulatory demands and promotes material efficiency by keeping materials in circulation.

Mera, a family-owned German pet food producer, has already adopted FlexiBag Reinforced, incorporating 35% PCR content in its 10 kg packs of vegan dry dog food. The transition was seamless, with the new packaging compatible with Mera’s existing machinery.

Enes Tajic, Purchasing Manager at Mera, also praised the partnership with Mondi, saying, “Working with our long-term, trusted partner Mondi meant that these new dog food products will be packed in a way that enables us to continue to create harmony between our furry friends and their environment.”
